Forward Prize for Poetry winners announced

In the UK, the winners of the 2014 Forward Prize for Poetry have been announced. The Forward Prize for Best Collection was awarded to The Cartographer Tries to Map a Way to Zion by Kei Miller (Carcanet). Miller received the £10,000 (A$18,500) prize at a ceremony in London, where poets read from shortlisted entries. The judging panel said Miller’s work is a ‘beautifully voiced collection which struck us all with its boldness and wit. Many poets refer to multiple realities, different ways of observing the world, Kei [Miller] doesn’t just refer, he articulates them.’ Black Country by Liz Berry (Chatto & Windus) won the £5000 (A$9260) Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection. Stephen Santus’ poem ‘In a Restaurant’ won the £1000 (A$1850) Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. The Forward Prize was set up in 1991 to celebrate excellence in new poetry writing in Britain and Ireland and recognises poets published in the previous calendar year.
