Patterson to donate £250k to UK indie booksellers

In the UK, author James Patterson has pledged £250k (A$451,363) to independent booksellers to encourage children to read, reports the Bookseller. Patterson made the announcement ahead of Independent Bookseller’s Week in the UK, which runs from 28 June to 5 July. Bookshops with a dedicated children’s book section can apply for a grant of between £250 (A$451) and £5000 (A$9035), which will be awarded based on the ‘strength and innovatory nature’ of the proposals. Patterson said far too many children are in danger of living their lives without books and ‘bookshops are the most viable bulwark against this and I need to be part of the fight to ensure their survival’. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Patterson pledged US$1 million (A$1.06 million) to US independent bookstores in September last year, and began distributing the funds in February this year.
