NZ$630,000 to PANZ for overseas promotion, internships

Creative New Zealand has awarded NZ$540,000 (A$493,637) to the Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ) for a range of programs to increase international sales of New Zealand authors.

The funding will be used for translation and international travel programs, including supporting New Zealand’s presence at international book fairs and hosting international publishers in New Zealand.

Creative New Zealand international programs senior manager Cath Cardiff said in a statement that developing international markets for New Zealand literature is ‘crucial’. ‘Our aim is to have one organisation developing and delivering a program so there is an overarching view and strategy for raising the profile and readership of our literature overseas,’ said Cardiff. ‘This was one of the recommendations of our review of Creative New Zealand’s support for literature which was approved by the Arts Council in February this year.’

Creative New Zealand has also awarded PANZ NZ$90,000 (A$82,272) to establish a national publishing internship initiative. Three internships, for a minimum of eight weeks, will be awarded annually for the next three years beginning in 2016.
