New ‘Books+Publishing Junior’ reviews out now

Books+Publishing’s latest Junior newsletter contains reviews of nine children’s and YA books publishing in December 2015 to February 2016.

Christopher Currie’s first YA novel Clancy of the Undertow (Text, December)—which follows 16-year-old misfit Clancy as she juggles a dysfunctional family, a hostile town and a crush on ‘the local hot girl’—received the highest score with 4.5 stars. In an interview with Currie, reviewer Dani Solomon asks: ‘For the record, having been that girl in a small country town, you got it exactly right. But some people might be worried about whether a 30-year-old straight man could write a 15-year-old lesbian. What would you say to them?’

Seven titles also received four stars from our reviewers.

Also reviewed are:

Picture books: Arthur and the Curiosity (Lucinda Gifford, Five Mile, February), Australia to Z (Armin Greder, A&U, January), George the Bilby Chef and the Raspberry Muffin Surprise (Jedda Robaard, Five Mile, February), The Marvellous Funambulist of Middle Harbour and Other Sydney Firsts (Hilary Bell, illus by Matthew Martin, NewSouth, December) and New Year Surprise! (Christopher Cheng, illus by Di Wu, NLA, February)

Younger readers: Iris and the Tiger (Leanne Hall, Text, February) and Wordburger (David Astle, A&U, December)
