Australian Family Therapists’ Awards 2015 winners announced

The winners of the 2015 Australian Family Therapists’ Awards for Children’s Literature have been announced.

Crashing Down by Kate McCaffrey (Fremantle Press) has won the $1500 Older Readers Award. The book tells the story of a Year 12 student whose ‘world is turned upside down when her boyfriend is involved in a car accident’ and she ‘finds out that she is pregnant and faces a dilemma about whether to terminate the pregnancy’.

Bully on the Bus (Kathryn Apel, UQP) has won the $1500 Young Readers/Picture Book Award. The book is about a boy ‘who dreads his daily bus ride to school because of the bully’.

The judges also recommended Roses are Blue (Sally Murphy, illus by Gabriel Evans, Walker Books), Emily Eases her Wheezes! (Katrina Roe, illus by Leigh Hedstrom, Wombat Books) and Happy Pants (Heather Gallagher, Wombat Books) as being useful for therapists as they may ‘enhance therapists’ insights into specific problem areas’.

The Australian Family Therapists’ Awards for Children’s Literature are presented by the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Family Therapy (ANZJFT). See last year’s winners here. More information about the awards can be found on the ANZJFT website.
