Readings established the award in February 2014 to support published Australian fiction authors, with the aim of increasing ‘the commercial success of first or second books by Australian authors’. The inaugural winner, Ceridwen Dovey’s Only the Animals (Hamish Hamilton), was one of Readings’ bestselling books in 2014.

The judges are Readings managing director Mark Rubbo, St Kilda store manager Amy Vuleta, Readings Monthly editor Elke Power and Hawthorn store buyer Danielle Mirabella. They will be joined by Burial Rites author Hannah Kent, who will help select a winner from the shortlist.

Readings and literary journal Kill Your Darlings will also host a ‘shortlist showdown’ event at Readings Carlton on 22 September, with six readers and writers making a case for why their favourite book from the shortlist should win. More information about the event can be found here.

The winner will be announced in late October.
