The winners were chosen from ‘hundreds’ of applications. Patterson said in a statement that he was ‘delighted by how many people have applied for the grants and the calibre of the applications’. ‘We have worked to identify bookshops for whom this money may make a real difference and for whom getting children reading is a real passion,’ he said.

Among the standout applications was a proposal from Paperbark Education to set up a mobile book bus to visit libraries and schools in regional Western Australia; Where The Wild Things Are’s ‘1000 Books Before Five’ adult-child reading initiative based on the school reading program; and Robinson’s Bookshops’ Einstein Project, which provides resources to local schools to support their literacy curriculum and provides access to visiting authors.

In total, Patterson has pledged $100,000 to Australian and New Zealand bookstores with dedicated children’s sections. The New Zealand recipients will be announced tomorrow.
