UK author and journalist Jon Ronson will deliver the opening address at the Brisbane Writers Festival on 2 September, joining international guests Sarah Waters, Cassandra Clare and Holly Black, among others, on the program.

This year’s festival, the first under director and acting CEO Julie Beveridge, runs from 2-6 September at the South Bank Cultural Centre under the theme ‘Minds Wide Open’.

Local authors David Burton, Eliza Henry Jones, Daniel Herborn, Christine Bongers, Deb Fitzpatrick and John Marsden will join Clare and Black for a seven-hour ‘non-stop Love YA!’ event at the Brisbane Square Library.

The ‘STORY+’ program will ‘investigate the future of writing and storytelling shaped by technology, design and data’, featuring Tom Uglow from Google Creative Lab, and Mike Jones, Naomi Alderman, Donna Hancox, Sue Swinburne and Oscar Schwartz.

Other international guests include Marc Lewis (Canada), Jonathan Galassi (US), Antony Beever (UK) and Laurie Penny (UK).

Among the program’s highlights are the ‘Brisbane 2050: Imagining Our Future City’ initiative; the ‘Inspire’ lecture series featuring Barbara Arrowsmith Young, Abdi Aden and Andy Jackson; Peter Singer’s ‘Good Thinking’ lecture; and an in-conversation with Kate Grenville.
