Jonathan Green appointed ‘Meanjin’ editor

Broadcaster and journalist Jonathan Green has been appointed editor of the literary journal Meanjin from 1 July.

In February former Monthly editor John van Tiggelen was appointed editor and was due to take up the position in 2016. In a statement Meanjin publisher Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) said van Tiggelen ‘has now decided to pursue other opportunities’.

Green is the presenter of ABC Radio National’s ‘Sunday Extra’ program. He has previously worked at the Age and was editor of Crikey and founding editor of the ABC’s online opinion site the Drum. He will continue to present the ‘Sunday Extra’ program.

MUP CEO Louise Adler said they are ‘thrilled to have snared the talent and experience that Jonathan Green will bring to Meanjin’. ‘He will undertake a comprehensive reimagining of Meanjin as a publication in print and online while commissioning this year’s Christmas issue,’ said Adler. ‘In 2016 this respected literary journal, a publication with a proud 75-year history, will reveal new energy and pertinence in Australia’s life of letters and ideas.’

Former editor Zora Sanders left Meanjin at the end of 2014. Writer and publisher Hilary McPhee is the guest editor of the June edition and the University of Melbourne vice-chancellor Glyn Davis will edit the September edition.
