MWF 2015 schools’ program released

The Melbourne Writers Festival has released its schools’ program for 2015.

This year’s schools’ program, which runs from 24 to 27 August, features Australian authors and illustrators including Andy Griffiths, Amie Kaufman, John Marsden, Leigh Hobbs, Justine Larbalestier, Jane Caro, Alice Pung, Emilie Zoey Baker, Trace Balla, Tristan Bancks, Bernard Caleo, Lucy Christopher, Lachlann Carter, Kelly Gardiner, Kylie Dunstan, Hannah Kent, Maureen McCarthy, Sally Rippin, Carole Wilkinson and Clare Wright.

International guests include Belgian illustrator Kitty Crowther, New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Samhita Arni, US teen inventor Jack Andraka and New Zealand science-fiction author Bernard Beckett.

Some of the highlights in this year’s program are: a tour of the Melbourne Immigration Museum’s exhibition ‘Identity—yours, mine, ours’, followed by workshops with writers Abdi Aden, Will Kostakis, Amra Pajalic and Alice Pung; a session with Lucy Christopher and Will Kostakis on how to successfully adapt a novel for the screen; an interactive drawing workshop with artists Leigh Hobbs and Ann James; a tour of the National Gallery of Victoria’s exhibition of creatures found in Australian picture books, followed by a workshop with illustrator Kylie Dunstan; a journey through classic Indian stories in graphic novel form with Samhita Arni and Annie Zaidi; a talk on writing, footy and passion with Nicole Hayes and Michael Hyde; and an Indigenous hip hop workshop.

The program also includes ‘Creative Classroom’ professional development sessions for teachers and librarians to inform them on the latest in books and writing for young people.
