Stella Prize 2015 shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2015 Stella Prize has been announced.

The shortlisted titles are:

  • Foreign Soil (Maxine Beneba Clarke, Hachette)
  • The Strays (Emily Bitto, Affirm Press)
  • The Invisible History of the Human Race (Christine Kenneally, Black Inc.)
  • The Eye of the Sheep (Sofie Laguna, A&U)
  • The Golden Age (Joan London, Random House)
  • Heat and Light (Ellen van Neerven, UQP).

 

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, 12 books were longlisted for the prize, which is presented for the best work of fiction or nonfiction by an Australian woman published in the previous calendar year. The entries are judged by critic and writer Kerryn Goldsworthy, journalist and broadcaster Caroline Baum, writer and lecturer Tony Birch, singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko and author Melissa Lucashenko.

‘We are thrilled with the strength and diversity of the 2015 Stella Prize shortlist,’ said Stella Prize executive director Aviva Tuffield. ‘These six remarkable books explore themes of identity, family, displacement and belonging, with distinctly Australian resonances. Two of the books are debut works, which speaks to the talent of Australian women writers, even those just beginning their careers as authors.’

The winner of this year’s prize will be announced in Melbourne on 21 April. The winner will receive a cash prize of $50,000. Each of the finalists will also receive a cash prize of $2000 as a result of a donation from the Nelson Meers Foundation.
