Hamilton and Lawrence joint winners of 2014 Newcastle Poetry Prize

Debi Hamilton and Anthony Lawrence are the joint winners of the 2014 Newcastle Poetry Prize for their poems ‘Red Riding Hood Grows Old’ and ‘Itinerary’, respectively.

The winners were announced at a ceremony in Newcastle on 26 October and will share the $12,000 prize. Philip Radmall won the third prize, worth $5000, for his poem ‘The Difference of Distance’ and Steve Armstrong won the local award, worth $500, for his poem ‘Deadman’.

The Harri Jones Memorial Award, worth $250, went to ‘Border Crossing’ by Caitlin Maling and the Hunter Writers Centre Members’ Award went to ‘Green Point Bearings’ by Kathryn Fry. Commended titles included ‘The Twilight Observatory’ by Jennifer Kornberger and ‘Bracketing a Bursting House’ by Lachlan Brown.

The winning poems have been published in the 2014 Newcastle Poetry Prize Anthology, which is available through the prize administrator Hunter Writers Centre.

Previous winners include Jennifer Compton (2013), David Musgrave (2012)Mark Tredinnick (2011) and Duncan Hose (2010). More information about the award can be found online here.
