Gifford wins inaugural Five Mile Press illustrator prize

Lucinda Gifford has won the inaugural Five Mile Press Illustrator Prize.

Five Mile publisher Kay Scarlett said the judges of the prize felt Gifford had the ‘strongest individual style’ of the approximately 100 entrants for the new award.

Gifford win a $4000 publishing contract with the publisher. ‘Her illustrations have so much personality and we don’t already have anything quite like her on our list,’ said Scarlett. ‘As an added bonus it is evident from her submission that she can draw creatures and characters which are both very appealing. Not all illustrators can draw humans but Lucinda can.’

Scarlett said the judges of the inaugural prize, which was launched by Five Mile Press earlier this year, were ‘overwhelmed by the standard of the entries’. ‘We would certainly like to keep the other shortlisted illustrators in mind for future projects down the track and encourage those who entered to try again another year,’ she said.

The other illustrators shortlisted for the award were Paul Heppell, Patricia Hopwood-Wade and Danielle Tam.
