Krien shortlisted for UK sports book award

Australian author Anna Krien’s Night Games (Black Inc.) is among the seven titles shortlisted for the 2014 William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award in the UK, reports the Bookseller.

The award, now in its 26th year, is the world’s richest prize for sports writing. The winner receives a £26,000 (A$47,600) cheque, as well as a £2500 (A$4560) bet with bookmakers William Hill.

The other shortlisted titles are: Bobby Moore: The Man in Full (Matt Dickinson, Yellow Jersey Press); Floodlights and Touchlines: A History of Spectator Sport (Rob Steen, Bloomsbury); Alone: The Triumph and Tragedy of John Curry (Bill Jones, Bloomsbury); Proud: My Autobiography (Gareth Thomas & Michael Calvin, Ebury Press); Played in London: Charting the Heritage of a City at Play (Simon Inglis, English Heritage); and Run or Die (Kilian Jornet, Viking).

Award co-founder and William Hill spokesperson Graham Sharpe said this year’s shortlist includes ‘compelling explorations of the personal struggles and triumphs of some of our most esteemed sporting figures, an enquiry into the dark side of sporting culture and not one, but two fascinating social histories’.

The winner will be announced in London on 27 November.
