Flanagan on Man Booker Prize shortlist

Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Vintage) is on the shortlist for this year’s Man Booker Prize.

The shortlist of six, selected from a longlist of 13, is:

  • To Rise Again at a Decent Hour (Joshua Ferris, Viking)
  • The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Richard Flanagan, Vintage)
  • We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves (Karen Joy Fowler, Serpent’s Tail)
  • J (Howard Jacobson, Jonathan Cape)
  • The Lives of Others (Neel Mukherjee, Chatto & Windus)
  • How to Be Both (Ali Smith, Hamish Hamilton).

The shortlisted titles were announced on 9 September by chair of judges AC Grayling, who praised the ‘depth and range’ of the list, which includes writers from Australia, the UK and the US.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, this is the first time the prize has been open to writers from outside the UK, Ireland and Commonwealth countries after eligibility rules were changed last year.

Each of the shortlisted authors receives £2500 (A$4373) and a specially bound edition of their book. The winner, who will be announced on 14 October, receives a further £50,000 (A$87,535).

‘We are thrilled that five brilliant Penguin Random House authors have been acknowledged with a Booker shortlisting this year,’ said Penguin Random House sales director Gavin Schwarcz. ‘The Booker recognition brings even more attention to each of our five shortlisted books and it’s a great boost for sales.’ Schwarcz confirmed that copies were in stock for The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
