REAL Awards 2014 shortlist announced

The shortlist for this year’s Reading & Enjoying Australian Literature (REAL) Awards, which acts as a shortlist for children’s choice book awards in the Australian Capital Territory (COOL Awards), New South Wales (KOALAs), the Northern Territory (KROC Awards) and Victoria (YABBAs), has been announced.

The shortlisted titles in each of the categories are:

Picture storybooks

Children in the ACT, NSW, NT and Victoria will vote for their favourite books in each category in October. The winners of the COOL, KOALA, KROC and YABBA awards will be announced in November. 

In related news, YABBA has received a grant of $15,000 from the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund for a project for authors and illustrators to visit schools across Victoria. In a statement, YABBA said that the grant will fund the Children’s Voice in Australian Fiction—YABBA Ambassadors Project, in which Australian authors and illustrators will visit Victorian schools to ‘engage students with recommending, reading, rating and rewarding Australian fiction’.  

YABBA asked schools, along with authors and illustrators, to submit Expressions of Interest to participate in the project. Successful applicants will be notified in early May, with the school visits to take place in Term 2 and Term 3 this year. Read more about the project here.
