Audible launches Australian audiobook store

Amazon-owned Audible has launched an Australian audiobook store.

The audible.com.au site went live on 15 January. Australian customers, who were previously able to purchase audiobooks from the Audible US site, were notified of the launch this week and encouraged to transfer their memberships to the Australian store.

Audible said in an email to Australian customers that transferring their memberships would allow them to ‘pay in Australian dollars, shop an Australian-focused website and take advantage of new pricing on titles above [their] regular plan’. The company is also offering a discount on monthly subscription fees for members who transfer to the Australian site.

The Australian Audible site is currently promoting local books on the front page of its website, including titles by Tim Winton, Matthew Reilly, Kerry Greenwood and Liane Moriarty, which are provided by Bolinda Audio. Bolinda co-CEO Rebecca Herrmann told Books+Publishing that the company has provided content to Audible for around 16 years.

‘We’re excited that Audible is showcasing more Australian content,’ said Herrmann. ‘We love that they are raising awareness of audiobooks in the local market and growing the local offering to create more business, while championing audiobooks as a enjoyable product for consumers.’

Audible was acquired by Amazon in 2008 and the audiobook publisher and retailer is now a subsidiary of Amazon. Its launch in Australia follows the launch of the Australian Kindle store in November 2013.
