Readings Foundation awards $134,750 in grants for 2014

The Stella Prize is one of seven organisations that will receive a share of $134,750 in grants from the Readings Foundation in 2014.

The prize, which was established in 2012 to promote writing by Australian women, will receive $10,000 towards the establishment of the Stella Prize Schools’ Program—an educational program that will include workshops with young writers; school visits by notable women writers and members of the Stella Prize board; professional development for teachers and librarians; and ‘engagement with curriculum decision-makers’.

The other 2014 grant recipients are:

The Wheeler Centre: $20,000 ‘to provide 20 Hot Desk Fellowships for writers working across the fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and young adult genres’
Refugee Survivors and Ex-Detainees: $20,000 ‘to provide free English as a Second Language tutoring classes to refugees and asylum seekers … who are unable to access such resources due to visa restrictions’
Save the Children: $19,990 ‘to fund an after-school literacy and homework support program for refugee and humanitarian migrant children and their families who live in the high-rise housing commission estate in Collingwood’
Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA): $19,760 ‘to promote a love of books and reading among Aboriginal children in VACCA’s foster, kinship and residential care services in three metropolitan Melbourne regions by providing to them free books through the Books in Homes program, which encourages children and foster carers to read together each day’
100 Story Building: $15,000 ‘to fund daily and after-school workshops for culturally and linguistically diverse children and young people’
Reading Out of Poverty: $15,000 ‘to provide an early literacy intervention program for disadvantaged children and parents in Geelong’.

The Readings Foundation will also continue to support Sacred Heart Mission and the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters, with each organisation to receive $6000. The foundation will also continue to fund a $3000 writer’s fellowship at the Glenfern Writers’ Studio, which is administered by Writers Victoria.

Readings donates 10% of its profits to the Readings Foundation each year, in addition to donations collected through gift wrapping, notice services and in-store events. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, the foundation distributed $151,319 in grants to 11 organisations in 2013.
