Haigh wins Waverley Library Award 2013

Gideon Haigh has won the 2013 Waverley Library Award for Literature, known as the ‘Nib’, for his book On Warne (Hamish Hamilton).

Haigh was presented with the award, worth $20,000, at a breakfast ceremony in Sydney on 20 November. John Hamilton won the People’s Choice Award, worth $500, for The Price of Valour (Pan).

Haigh’s and Hamilton’s books were chosen from a shortlist of six, which also included: Three Crooked Kings (Matthew Condon, UQP); Rendezvous with Destiny (Michael Fullilove, Viking); Burial Rites (Hannah Kent, Picador); and Madeleine: A Life of Madeleine St John (Helen Trinca, Text). Each of the shortlisted authors received the Alex Buzo Shortlist Prize of $1000.

The Waverley Library Award was established in 2002 to recognise the role of research in fiction and nonfiction. Last year’s award went to Jane Gleeson-White for her book Double Entry (A&U). Haigh previously won the award in 2006 for his book Asbestos House (Scribe) and was shortlisted in 2002 for his book The Big Ship (Text).
