Amazon/Macmillan stand-off ends; Hachette to adopt 'agency model' for ebooks

It took a week to resolve the stand-off, but 'buy' buttons for Macmillan US titles have now returned to Amazon following the resolution of a dispute over the pricing of ebooks in Amazon's Kindle store.

Under the new 'agency model', publishers will make less per ebook sold, but they will have more control over pricing.

Hachette is the second major publisher to announce it will move to the new pricing model, with others expected to follow.

However, commentators in the UK and in Australia fear that the agency model could run foul of competition regulations.

Meanwhile, Amazon customers have started a massive boycott of any ebooks priced at over US$9.99.
