The Orion Group (part of Hachette) and one of its authors have won a landmark ruling in the UK's Court of Appeal which could help protect the viability of future books based on investigative journalism.
Bent Coppers (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2003) by journalist Graeme McLagan was the subject of libel proceedings an ex-police officer Michael Charman, who claimed that the book libelled him. Orion contested the claim using the 'Reynolds Defence', normally used for journalists' work in newspapers. A lower court initially ruled against Orion in July 2006. The Police Federation now faces paying over £1m in costs as a result of the decision.
