Beirut has been named as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2009 ‘in the light of its focus on cultural diversity, dialogue and tolerance.' The selection committee included representatives from the International Publishers Association, International Booksellers Federation and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, as well as UNESCO. Bogota is this year's World Book Capital and the 2008 capital will be Amsterdam.
