Queensland Writers on the International Stage program releases first multimedia project

Former Queensland Writers Centre CEO and crime and thriller writer Meg Vann’s short story ‘Provocation’ has been adapted into an online multimedia verse project, exploring the themes of female agency and violence against women.

Provocare’ was created by Vann, interaction designer Mez Breeze and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researcher Donna Hancox. The project is the first work to be commissioned and produced for Queensland Writers on the International Stage, an Arts Queensland-funded program created by QUT and The Writing Platform that supports collaborations between writers and interactive designers.

In a statement, Vann said the story follows a survivor of anorexia nervosa who ‘develops dysfunctional habits that, while self-harming in relation to her illness, are adapted to become tools in her battle for survival against the pernicious and unrecognised violence of a workplace stalker’. ‘Surveillance is also a theme in “Provocare” as I am increasingly concerned about the misuse of surveillance technology—designed to improve public safety—in the abuse of women,’ said Vann.

A second work created for Queensland Writers on the International Stage, an audio adaptation of Krissy Kneen’s short story ‘Crawl Space’, will launch later this year.
