Screen Australia announces funding for book-to-film adaptations; nonfiction from Garner and Law among the projects

A film based on Helen Garner’s nonfiction book Joe Cinque’s Consolation (Pan) is the latest book-to-film project to receive funding from Screen Australia.

The film will be directed by Sotiris Dounoukos, who co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Rubinstein. The ‘chilling true story’ is based on the legal trials of two Canberra women who were charged over the death of a young man.

Funding has also been confirmed for a TV miniseries adaptation of Benjamin Law’s comic memoir The Family Law (Black Inc.). Six half-hour episodes, written by Law and Marieke Hardy, will dramatise 14-year-old Law’s attempts to ‘strive for television soap mega-stardom whilst trying to stop his parents from splitting up’. The series will be produced by Matchbox Pictures and shown on SBS.

Production investment support has also been given to a film adaptation of Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey (A&U), ‘a coming-of-age murder mystery’ which has previously been adapted for the stage; and a film adaptation of Yossi Ghinsberg’s memoir Jungle (GOKO), about a man who was lost for three weeks in the Amazon. The latter will be produced by Wolf Creek director Greg McLean.

Screen Australia announced $10.7 million in funding for 11 television and film projects on 26 November. For more information about the projects, visit the website here.
