‘Jasper Jones’ filming to begin in October

The director and initial cast of the film adaptation of Jasper Jones (Craig Silvey, A&U) has been announced, with filming set to begin in the Western Australia’s South West in late October.

Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Dae, Radiance, One Night the Moon) will direct the film, which is produced by Bunya Production’s David Jowsey and Prochlight Film’s Vincent Sheehan, with Leva Miller to play the lead Charlie Bucktin, Angourie Rice to play Eliza Wishart and Aaron Mcgrath as Jasper Jones.

Miller appeared in the US TV series Terra Nova, and is the lead in the upcoming local film Blue Dog; Rice was the lead in These Final Hours; while McGrath will appear in the upcoming ‘ABC’ series Ready for This, and has previously appeared in The Code and Redfern Now.

The screenplay has been adapted for screen by Shaun Grant (Snowtown).

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, the adaption has received multiple rounds of funding from Screen Australia, including development support funding in 2012 and 2013, and production support in 2014. The WA state government’s South West Development commission has also given a $200,000 grant, with production to be based in the town of Pemberton.
