ABR announces $5000 fellowship program

The Australian Book Review (ABR) has announced the creation of a new ABR Patrons’ Fellowship program.

The publication’s editor Peter Rose told the Weekly Book Newsletter that ABR hoped to offer two to three fellowships each year. ‘This Fellowship, worth $5000, is possible because of the largesse of ABR’s Patrons,’ he said.

The Fellowships are open to ‘established Australian writers’. ‘The successful applicant will be a senior writer, scholar, journalist or commentator with a strong publication record,’ said a statement from the magazine. The successful applicant will then spend ‘up to a week’ at ABR’s Melbourne office, and will produce an article of between 6000 and 10,000 words, for publication in the magazine. The Fellow will also take part in ‘a round-table discussion with staff, interns and contributors, and in a public event’.

Rose said the Fellowship scheme was intended to reward outstanding Australian writers, to enhance ABR through the publication of major works of literary journalism, and to advance the magazine’s commitment to critical debates and literary values.
