New website brings together top Australian literary magazines

An initiative of the Australia Council, the newly launched website www.litmags.com.au brings together details about 10 Australian literary magazines.

The titles featured on the website, which was launched today, are Australian Book Review, Griffith REVIEW, Heat, Island Magazine, Meanjin, Overland, Quadrant, Southerly, Voiceworks and Wet Ink. All have received Australia Council funding at some point and were chosen for their high quality and because ‘they print regularly, whereas some [journals] print sporadically', according to Australia Council spokesperson Cameron Woods.

Woods told the Weekly Book Newsletter the site was the result of networking and discussion with and between the journals and that the site would be revisited in future to see what effects it had had and to consider possible developments such as combined subscriptions.

One of the things we like is that the magazines are all quite different,' said Woods. ‘[The site] offers a smorgasbord in one spot.'
