Hyland, Catton on Orange Prize longlist
M J Hyland (This is How, Text) and New Zealand author Eleanor Catton (The Rehearsal, A&U) are among the authors on the longlist for this year's Orange Prize for Fiction. The shortlist will be announced on 20 April, with the prize presented at an awards ceremony on 9 June. The Independent has the full longlist here.
CK Stead shortlisted for Sunday Times short story award
New Zealand author C K Stead has been shortlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award for Last Season's Man. The winner receives a £25,000 (A$41,500) prize. The award is open to writers published in the UK and Ireland, although the shortlisted nominees are each from different countries around the globe. The winner will be announced at The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival, which runs from 20-28 March.
Storylines Literature Festival in WA
Storylines Literature Festival runs from 17-19 March at the All Saints' College in the Perth suburb of Bull Creek. The festival celebrates YA and children's literature. Students from schools all over WA have been invited to All Saints' College to take part in the event. A mix of WA and Australian authors 'will talk about their own creative processes', says principle of All Saints' College Dr Geoff Shaw. Attendees will have ‘the opportunity to meet and speak with, face to face, real published authors and illustrators, and to buy signed copies of their works; panels of speakers debating current issues; storytelling sessions; workshops. As usual, we also have a strong indigenous stream in our presentations'.
Bologna Children's Book Fair
Bologna Children's Book Fair will showcase children's books from around the world from 23-26 March in the Piazza Costituzione of Bologna, Italy. Publishers, authors, illustrators, translators, literary and rights agents, and publishing industry professionals will hear speakers at forums and workshops, and view the enormous collection of children's books at the illustrators exhibition. The exhibitors' catalogue currently lists 25 Australian children's publishers.
Inaugural Award for Illustration at Bologna
One illustrator aged under 35 at Bologna Children's Book Fair will be awarded the inaugural SM Foundation International Award for Illustration, for quality works yet to be acknowledged by publishers, chosen from the illustrators exhibition. The winner of the US$30,000 (A$32,650) prize will be announced at the Fair and offered the opportunity to illustrate a children's book. The annual Bolognaragazzi Award will be given to books with the finest graphic and editorial design in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, New Horizons, and the new Opera Prima for young authors and illustrators with innovative designs.
‘ABR' announces short story competition
Australian Book Review (ABR) has announced a new short story competition, with a first prize of $2000 and publication in the magazine. To be eligible a story must be in English, between 1000 and 3000 words long and previously unpublished and not on offer elsewhere. A second prize ($500) and third prize (one-year ABR subscription) are also on offer. The closing date is 10 May. For details see the ABR website here.
Indigo and Nature Conservancy Australia announce new nature writing prize
WA-based Indigo journal and Nature Conservancy Australia have announced a new prize for nature writing. The prize, to be awarded biennially, will be worth $5000, with the winner of the inaugural award to be published in Volume 7 of the journal in February 2011. Entries close on 30 September. Wyld appointed Booktrust online writer in residence
Evie Wyld, author of After the Fire, A Still Small Voice (Vintage), has been announced as the new ‘online writer in residence' for UK charity Booktrust. Wyld will hold an online bookclub with independent booksellers in September to launch the paperback edition of her novel in the UK. ‘I see it as a chance to lift the veil a little on the creative process at the same time as promoting creative writing, books and independent bookshops,' said Wyld of her appointment. During her residency, Wyld will contribute a new short story to the website, as well as ‘a weekly blog, a video interview with her favourite author, writing tips and advice on getting published', reported the Bookseller.
