The ACT Book of the Year Award 2014 shortlist has been announced.

The shortlisted titles are:

  • 18 Days: Al Jazeera English and the Egyptian Revolution (Scott Bridges, Editia)
  • Earthmasters: The Dawn of the Age of Climate Engineering (Clive Hamilton, A&U)
  • The Petrov Poems (Lesley Lebkowicz, Pitt Street Poetry)
  • Who We Were (Lucy Neave, Text)
  • Beloved Land: Stories, Struggles and Secrets from Timor-Leste (Gordon Peake, Scribe).

An inaugural People’s Choice Award is also open to all shortlisted titles and aims to build an interest in local writers. The award will highlight how ‘readers of Canberra and the region agree or differ from the judging panel’.

The ACT Book of the Year Award, valued at $10,000, recognises quality contemporary Australian literary works including fiction, nonfiction and poetry, by ACT authors published in the previous calendar year. The winners of the Book of the Year Award and People’s Choice Award will be announced in early in 2015. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, the eligibility for the award changed so that entrants must reside within the ACT’s boundaries.
