Walkley Book Award 2014 longlist announced

The longlist for the 2014 Walkley Book Award has been announced. 

The longlisted titles are:

  • Breaking News: Sex, Lies and the Murdoch Succession (Paul Barry, A&U)
  • Jacks and Jokers (Mathew Condon, UQP)
  • Prisoner X (Rafael Epstein, MUP)
  • Warning: The Story of Cyclone Tracy (Sophie Cunningham, Text)
  • Triumph and Demise: The Broken Promise of a Labor Generation (Paul Kelly, MUP)
  • Hockey: Not Your Average Joe (Madonna King, UQP)
  • The Prince: Faith, Abuse and George Pell (David Marr, Black Inc.)
  • Kerry Stokes: Self-made Man (Margaret Simons, Penguin)
  • The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka (Clare Wright, Text).

 

The shortlist for this year’s award will be announced on 6 November. The winner will be announced at a gala presentation in Sydney on 4 December. 

The Walkley Book Award recognises excellence in Australian nonfiction literature and long-form journalism. Last year’s winner was Pamela Williams for Killing Fairfax (HarperCollins).

The longlist for the book award was announced along with all the finalists for the 2014 Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism. 

Paul Toohey’s essay ‘That Sinking Feeling: Asylum Seekers and the Search for the Indonesian Solution’, published in Quarterly Essay 53 (Black Inc.), has been nominated for the Walkley Award for Feature Writing Long (over 4000 words).
