New joint venture to digitise NZ books

A new venture in New Zealand aiming to digitise New Zealand books has so far attracted 300 books from 30 publishers, reports Scoop.

New Zealand's Copyright Licensing Ltd (CLL), Digital Strategies Limited and InfoGrid Pacific Pte Limited have formed a venture to digitise New Zealand books and are seeking rights from publishers and authors to digitise works to be made available to consumers on electronic reading devices and under license to libraries, booksellers and educational institutions.

The project, to be managed by Digital Publishing Forum director Martin Taylor through his company Digital Strategies Limited, is scheduled to launch to the public in the second quarter of 2010.

InfoGrid Pacific Pte Limited will provide the XML publishing and distribution platform required to digitise and distribute the works.

‘Our plan is to use some of New Zealand's great works as ebooks to encourage companies like Sony, Asus and others to enter the New Zealand market early and help to grow it,' said Taylor.
