Inaugural NSW State Library Awards announced

The winners of the inaugural NSW State Library Awards, which recognise the work of library professionals, have been announced.

Former NSW governor Marie Bashir was awarded the Medal of the Library Council of New South Wales, ‘the highest honour conferred by the library council’. Library Council president Rob Thomas presented the medal to Bashir for her ‘eminence and scholarship, sustained care for the people of NSW, and for enduring support for this great Library’. The announcement followed the naming of the Governor Marie Bashir Reading Room hours earlier.

Other award-winners were Belinda Hutchinson and Kate Grenville, who were each presented with the Dixson Medal for ‘distinguished and sustained achievement in a field of endeavour consistent with the mission and values, vision and strategic priorities of the Library’; and Andrew Wells, who was awarded the Ifould Medal for ‘distinguished and sustained achievement as a professional librarian, archivist or curator’.

Rosemary Block was named Emeritus Curator for ‘eminent and sustained contributions to the development, preservation or interpretation of the collections of the State Library’; and Cecil Churm, Robert Clancy, Bridget Griffen-Foley and Robert Knight were named Honorary Fellows for ‘exceptional and sustained contributions in support of the aims of the State Library’.

In a statement, NSW State Librarian and CEO Alex Byrne said ‘it’s fitting that the exciting renaming of the Reading Room and announcement on our inaugural Library awards take place just prior to the state‐wide celebration in November of the 75th anniversary of the NSW Library Act’.
