Australian Book Design Awards 2014 winners announced

The Australian Book Designers Association (ABDA) announced the winners for the 2014 Book Design Awards at a gala event in Melbourne on 22 August.

The winning titles in each category are:

Best Designed Literary Fiction Book:

  • The Luminaries (Eleanor Catton, Granta), desgined by Jenny Grigg

 

Best Designed Commercial Fiction Book:

  • The Rosie Project (Graeme Simsion, Text), cover designed by W H Chong, internals designed by Imogen Stubbs

 

Best Designed Nonfiction Book:

  • Madness: A Memoir (Kate Richards, Viking), designed by Allison Colpoys

 

Best Designed Series (including Classics):

  • David Vogel series (Scribe), designed by Miriam Rosenbloom

 

Best Designed Fully-illustrated Book under RRP $50:

  • Naples: A Way of Love (Carla Coulson & Lisa Clifford, Lantern), designed by Evi O

 

Best Designed Fully-illustrated Book over RRP $50:

  • Akio Makigawa (ed by Jackie Cooper, Macmillan), designed by Jane Mooney and Gary Emery

 

Best Designed Cookbook:

  • Love Italy (Guy Grossi, Lantern), designed by Daniel New

 

Best Designed Young Adult Book:

  • Zac & Mia (A J Betts, Text), designed by W H Chong, internals designed by design Imogen Stubbs
  • The Girl Defective (Simmone Howell, Pan Macmillan), designed by Sandy Cull

 

Best Designed Children’s Illustrated Book:

  • Rules of Summer (Shaun Tan, Hachette), designed by Shaun Tan

 

Best Designed Children’s Fiction Book:

  • WeirDo (Anh Do, illus by Jules Faber, Scholastic), designed by Nicole Stofberg 

 

Best Designed Children’s/Young Adult Series:

  • ‘Don’t Look Down’ series (Paul Jennings, illus by Andrew Weldon, A&U), designed by Bruno Herfst and Andrew Weldon

 

Indie 1000: Best Designed Independent Publication:

  • Iden 2 (ed by Miles Park & Berto Pandolfo, Industrial Design Educators Network), designed by Equilibrium Design

 

Best Designed Educational Primary/Secondary Book:

  • Nelson Senior Maths General 11 (Anne McMahon et al, Cengage Learning), designed by Leigh Ashforth  

 

Best Designed Educational Tertiary Book:

  • Second Opinion: An Introduction to Health Sociology (John Germov, OUP), designed by Ana Cosma

 

Young Designer of the Year:

  • Kirby Armstrong: A Double Spring (Juliet Darling, illus by Torey Wahlstrom, A&U), A Place Called Home (Jason Grant, Hardie Grant), Meet… Captain Cook (Rae Murdie, illus by Chris Nixon, Random House) and Run (Tim Sinclair, illus by Brett Armstrong, Penguin)

 

Bookworld People’s Choice Award:

  • 101 Moments of Joy and Inspiration (Meredith Gaston, Lantern), designed by Arielle Gamble

 

Designers’ Choice Book of the Year

  • Love Italy (Guy Grossi, Lantern), designed by Daniel New
  • Decade (Rennie Ellis, Hardie Grant Books), designed by David Pidgeon

 

Designers’ Choice Best Cover of the Year

  • A Girl is a Half-formed Thing (Eimear McBride, Text), designed by W H Chong

 

Designers’ Choice Young Adult/Children’s Cover of the Year (joint winners)

  • WeirDo (Anh Do, illus by Jules Faber, Scholastic), designed by Nicole Stofberg 
  • Alphabetical Sydney (Antonia Pesenti & Hilary Bell, NewSouth Publishing), designed by Natalie Winter and Antonia Pesenti.

 

The shortlisted books are currently on display at Ariel Books in Paddington, Sydney, and Readings Hawthorn in Melbourne, until 28 July. View the full shortlist here.

On the judging panel for this year’s awards were: Jennifer Byrne (ABC TV’s The Book Club), Mary Callahan (Mary Callahan Design), Josh Durham (Design by Committee), Jon Gray (Gray318), Peter Long (Black Inc.), Tony Palmer (Penguin and RMIT), Shona Martyn (HarperCollins) and Mark Rubbo (Readings).

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, the newly formed Australian Book Designers Association (ABDA) has taken over responsibility for the awards from the Australian Publishers Association.
