Vogel shortlist announced

The titles shortlisted for this year’s Australian/Vogel’s Literary Award have been announced.

The shortlisted titles, chosen from 100 entries, are:

  • The Collapse (Aidan Anderson)
  • Dream England (Stephanie Bishop)
  • The Windy Season (Sam Carmody)
  • After Darkness (Christine Piper)
  • At the Last (Katherine Ryan)
  • Into a Turquoise Pool (Gretchen Shirm).

Extracts of the shortlisted titles appeared in the Australian newspaper on 12 April.

Australian literary editor and award judge Stephen Romei said he was confident the winning title, which will be announced on 22 April, ‘will not be the only shortlisted work to find a publisher’.

This year’s judges are Romei, 2002 Vogel winner Danielle Wood, and owner of the Avid Reader boostore Fiona Stager.

‘We were impressed by the quality of the entries and the range of their interests—the shortlist spans social satire, historical drama, gritty realism and fantasy,’ wrote Romei.

The winner of the $20,000 award for a first novel by a writer under 35 will be published by Allen & Unwin and available for sale from 23 April.
