Kibble and Dobbie Awards 2014 longlists announced

The longlists for this year’s Kibble and Dobbie Literary Awards have been announced.

The longlisted titles for the $30,000 Kibble Literary Award, which recognises the work of an established Australian female writer, are:

  • Letter to George Clooney (Debra Adelaide, Picador)
  • The Secret Lives of Men (Georgia Blain, Scribe)
  • The Railwayman’s Wife (Ashley Hay, A&U)
  • The Heaven I Swallowed (Rachel Hennessy, Wakefield Press)
  • Mullumbimby (Melissa Lucashenko, UQP)
  • Boy, Lost: A Family Memoir (Kristina Olsson, UQP).

 

The longlisted titles for the $5000 Dobbie Literary Award, which recognises the work of a first-time published Australian female writer, are:

  • Salt Story: Of Sea Dogs and Fisherwomen (Sarah Drummond, Fremantle Press)
  • The Night Guest (Fiona McFarlane, Hamish Hamilton)
  • The First Week (Margaret Merrilees, Wakefield Press)
  • Madness: A Memoir (Kate Richards, Penguin)
  • Mr Wigg (Inga Simpson, Hachette)
  • High Sobriety: My Year without Booze (Jill Stark, Scribe).

 

Speaking on behalf of the judging panel, Elizabeth Webby said: ‘The arts community and the wider Australian public should be immensely proud that we continue to produce such fascinating, imaginative female authors, who have an unwavering ability to create such powerful novels.’

The shortlists for this year’s awards will be announced on 4 June, followed by the winners announcement on 23 July.

The Kibble and Dobbie Literary Awards aim to encourage Australian women writers of both fiction and nonfiction. In 2013, the Kibble Literary Award was presented to Annah Faulkner for The Beloved (Picador) and the Dobbie Literary Award was presented to Lily Chan for Toyo: A Memoir (Black Inc.).
