National Biography Award 2013 shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2013 National Biography Award, presented by the State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW), has been announced.

The shortlisted titles are:

  • Speechless: A Year in My Father’s Business (James Button, MUP)
  • Montebello: A Memoir (Robert Drewe, Hamish Hamilton)
  • The Two Frank Thrings (Peter Fitzpatrick, Monash University Publishing)
  • Gough Whitlam: His Time (Jenny Hocking, MUP)
  • Reaching One Thousand (Rachel Robertson, Black Inc.).

 

The winner of this year’s award will be announced on 5 August at the SLNSW to mark the beginning of the library’s Biography Week—a public events program dedicated to biography, autobiography and memoir. The winner of the award will receive a cash prize of $25,000 and each shortlisted author will receive $1000.

The National Biography Award is Australia’s richest prize for biographical writing and memoir. In 2012, the award was presented to The Many Worlds of R H Matthews: In Search of an Australian Anthropologist by Martin Thomas (A&U).
