Hartcher wins Ashurst Business Literature Prize

Journalist Peter Hartcher has won this year’s Ashurst Business Literature Prize for his book The Sweet Spot: How Australia Made Its Own Luck (Black Inc.).

Federal MP Malcolm Turnbull presented the $30,000 award to Hartcher at an event in Sydney on 6 June. Hartcher’s book was selected from a shortlist of five. His book was also previously longlisted for the 2012 Walkley Book Award.

Black Inc. publisher Chris Feik told Books+Publishing that Hartcher ‘writes like a dream and his book is a splendid account of the “Australian model”what makes this society distinctivein particular how the reforms of the eighties helped us ride out the Global Financial Crisis’.

Administered by the State Library of NSW and law firm Ashurst, the Ashurst Business Literature Prize was established in 2004 and was previously known as the Blake Dawson Business Literature Prize.

The annual prize aims to encourage literary commentary on Australian business and financial affairs. Previous winners include Trevor Sykes, who won the prize in 2012 for Six Months of Panic: How the Global Financial Crises Hit Australia (A&U), and Paul Barry, who won the prize in 2011 for Who Wants to Be a Billionaire?
