This year’s Get Reading! campaign was officially launched on 26 August and the ‘50 Books You Can’t Put Down’ list is now available.
This year’s campaign, which will run until 30 September, features an all-Australian reading guide—the
first in the campaign’s history. The guide features 25 adult fiction titles, nine adult nonfiction books and 16 titles for young readers. Forty-seven of the titles in this year's guide are available as ebooks, and 12 of the 50 titles are available as audiobooks.
Random House has the most titles on this year's list with 11 titles, followed by Penguin with seven titles, and Allen & Unwin, HarperCollins, and Hachette with six titles each.
As
previously reported by Bookseller+Publisher, this year’s campaign will not feature a free book incentive—a key feature of the campaign in previous years. Instead, the campaign will focus on author touring events, with 14 authors participating in events throughout September. The Get Reading! year-long touring program, which was
introduced last year, will also continue.
Booktopia CEO Tony Nash told
Bookseller+Publisher that Booktopia has decided to continue the tradition of offering a free book with the purchase of a title from the Get Reading! guide this year, at the retailer's expense. Customers will have the choice of one of four free books when they purchase a Get Reading! title from Booktopia, and Nash said customers who purchase multiple titles from the list will receive the same number of free books.
Get Reading! said in a statement that more than 1000 bookstores, libraries and online retailers will take part in this year’s campaign, which will include competitions and giveaways via ABC Radio and the Get Reading! website. A national television advertising campaign will feature Kathy Lette, Michael O’Loughlin and Anthony Field.
