2012 kuril dhagun Indigenous Writing Fellowships announced

The winners of this year’s kuril dhagun Indigenous Writing Fellowships, presented as part of the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing Program, have been announced.

This year’s fellowships have been awarded to Teagan Chilcott for The Rise of the Fallen and the author and illustrator team of Jillian Boyd and Tori-Jay Mordey for Bakir and Bi. Each fellowship is worth $10,000 and includes a publishing deal with Magabala Books.

Magabala marketing manager Nic Murray told Bookseller+Publisher that the two books are due to be released in April 2013. The Rise of the Fallen is a ‘young adult paranormal romance in an urban setting’, while Bakir and Bi is a children’s chapter book based on a Torres Strait Islander creation story.

Magabala announced its partnership with the SLQ in 2011. The manuscripts by the winners of the inaugural kuril dhagun fellowships—Ruby Moonlight by Ali Cobby Eckermann and Grace Beside Me by Sue McPherson—were published by Magabala earlier this year.

The black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing program, which was launched by SLQ in 2010, aims to train, mentor and promote outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers and editors. More information about the program is available here.
