A number of Australian booksellers have been affected by what appears to be a series of fraudulent orders originating overseas and being delivered to a Sydney-based freight forwarder.
Co-founder and director of The Nile online bookstore Jethro Marks told Bookseller+Publisher that The Nile is among up to 15 booksellers who may have been affected by the scheme. Marks said he visited freight forwarder Wiseway this week after being alerted to a number of fraud orders being delivered to a Sydney address: 2 Chapel Street, Marrickville, NSW.
The company had received more than 50 books from booksellers around the country, said Marks. ‘It appears that an overseas buyer using stolen credit cards was buying books and having them delivered to Wiseway, with the intention of shipping them offshore,’ he said.
Marks said that Wiseway is now attempting to return the books to retailers. He suggested that any stores that have shipped a book to the Marrickville address should get in touch with Wiseway to determine if they have been affected by the scheme.
