The shortlist for this year’s Australian / Vogel’s Literary Award has been announced, ahead of the announcement of the winner tonight in Sydney.
The shortlisted manuscripts are:
- Living Rooms (Michael Hugill)
- Eleven Seasons (Paul D Carter)
- Excursions (Clare Carlin).
The winner of this year’s award will be announced at a special event at Allen & Unwin’s Sydney office tonight. The winning manuscript has been published by Allen & Unwin, with the ebook to go on sale tonight after 7.30pm. Print copies of the winning book will be available from booksellers tomorrow.
Revealing this year’s shortlist in the Australian on 21 April, Vogel judge and Australian chief literary critic Georgie Williamson said each of the shortlisted manuscripts is set in contemporary Australia. ‘Each is concerned with the domestic round, the daily tedium of parental intransigence and sibling rivalry,’ said Williamson. ‘Yet their collective achievement is to reveal the immoderacy and insensitivity that can lie behind the soft-focus fantasies and false nostalgia of family life.’
The Australian / Vogel’s Literary Award is presented each year to an unpublished manuscript by a writer under the age of 35. The award carries a cash prize of $20,000 and the winning manuscript is published by Allen & Unwin. Last year’s award went to Rohan Wilson for The Roving Party (A&U).
